The move from IT provided by the Department itself (through the BCG) to support provided by SMPH central IT (IIT) has been in discussion for several years now. This spring we started moving a few individual labs from BCG resources into IIT.
After the transition:
- File storage will be on DoIT storage, for personal directories and research storage. There is some high-speed storage for high-performance computing environment, but that is for compute use only, and is not backed up.
- Platform R, which has slurm instead of HTCondor, will be used for high performance computation.
- You will use your NetID to access everything, and you will no longer use your Biostat local account.
- Most of your laptop and laptop support will stay the same, in terms of software, but new processes will be rolled out for maintenance and administration. A new organization, supporting several departments, including Biostatistics, will be responsible for desktop support.
- There will be a new ticketing system, quite similar to how sysreq works now, just part of a larger IIT Jira project.
The transition should be finished by the end of this year (December), or very early in 2026.
More details will be sent out to individuals as they apply to them.
Next Steps
When we are ready to start moving your lab, we will contact you. The current process looks like this:
If there are particular times that are especially bad or especially good for us to start this move for you, please let us know.
Staffing
The BCG will no longer exist after September:
- Paul Gunther’s last day: May 23.
- William Annis’ last day: May 30.
- Janet Lewis’ and Eric Bolden’s last day: September 26.
Currently, both Paul Gunther and William Annis have positions within the SMPH IIT organization, and so both will still be helping with some aspects of the move, as well as training IIT staff on those Biostat operations they were responsible for.
