Printing

For any printing, you will need to know the name of the printer you want to print to. Printers have labels with their names on them. Be especially careful if you’re printing sensitive documents to know which printer you’re sending them to.

Printing from Unix

First, many applications will have a print option from their File menus.

To print from the command line, use the command lpr -P$name (where $name is the name of the printer you want to use). You can also type the command with a space before the printername, as in lpr -P $name. Let us know if you want your desktop computer to print to a particular printer by default.

You can use the command lpq -P$name to find out how many print jobs are currently in the printer’s queue.

Additional printing parameters can be used to specify single-sided or duplex mode, or other print formatting. Particularly useful ones:
lpr -P$ -o sides=two-sided-long-edge filename
lpr -P$name -o sides=two-sided-short-edge filename
lpr -P$name -o sides=one-sided filename (if a printer is set to print duplex by default)
lpr -P$name -o landscape filename

Printing from Windows

All Windows applications will have print options from their File menus. To set your default printer:

1. Click on the start menu and select “Devices and Printers”.
2. When the list of printers comes up right-click on the desired printer and choose “Set as Default” from the pop-up menu.

Add a Biostat printer to a personal machine, connected to the BCG network using the campus VPN ( required – connect with your dynamic VPN, the one connected to your netid )

1. From the Start Menu, Navigate to and open the Control Panel.
2. Select and Open Devices and Printers
3. Select Add a Printer
4. The “Choose a Device or Printer to Add to this PC” window will now come up.
   Click on “The Printer I Want Isn’t Listed” option.
5. The “Find a Printer by Other Options” window will now open.
   Select the “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname” selection and click Next
6. The “Type a printer hostname or IP address” window will come up.
   Ensure that “Autodetect” is selected for the “Device Type” and the “Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use” check box is checked.
   Enter the hostname or IP address [if available] (i.e. lp1.biostat.wisc.edu or cpmsc6.biostat.wisc.edu etc.) then click Next
   (If this were a PC on the BCG Domain, windows would identify and apply the correct drivers to it, however since this is a PC outside the domain, proceed to the next steps).
7. The “Install the printer driver” window will now appear and it will show a listing of Manufacturers on the left and Printers on the right.
   Please note that Windows 10 may not list all the needed Manufacturers and printers by default. If this is so, click on “Windows Update” to get an updated list. It will run for a moment searching for drivers and manufacturers etc.
8. After the update completes, a more comprehensive list will be searchable. (Please ensure that you know the model of the printer that you would like to print to. This will be displayed on the printer itself e.g HP Color Laserjet M651 etc.).
9. Select the Manufacturer e.g. HP, and the desired model number in the Printer section then click Next.
10. After windows carries out its install process, the “You’ve successfully added [Printer Name] eg. HP Laserjet 600 M601 M602 M603 window then comes up.
    Rename the Printer to Reflect the official name of the Printer e.g. LP1 – HP Laserjet M603 PCL6 Rm 253, LP244 – HP Color M451 PCL6 Rm 244, cpmsc6 (HP Color LaserJet MFP M477fdn) etc.
11. Click Next then Finish
12. You will now be able to see your installed printer in the Printers List.

Printing from macOS

All Mac applications will have print options from their File menus. The Unix commands given above will also work from either the Terminal app or from X11 xterms.

How to print to biostat printers from your mac laptop:

1) You must run the WiscVPN client on your Mac laptop in order to connect to biostat printers.

2) To create the printer on your laptop.

1. Click on the apple menu and select “System Preferences”.
2. Then click on the “Printers and Scanners” system preference.
3. In the printers & scanners window click on the “+” to add a new printer.
4. In the “Add” printer window click the “IP” option at the top. In the “Address: ” field type in the host name or IP address of the printer. For example “lp31.biostat.wisc.edu”. In the “Protocol” field click on the up and down arrows and select “HP Jetdirect – Socket”. Note once you type in the address of the printer it should automatically detect the model of the printer (HP LaserJet 905).
5. Click one “Add” button to create the printer. A settings window may appear for the printer to select the default options. If you are not sure about these settings check with your support person.
