BCG Status Updates

September 29 2014 - MSC Power Outage (4am-7am)

From the NOC:

The Electric Shop is planning a power outage at MSC on Tuesday,
September 30, between 4:00 a.m and 7:00 a.m. This outage has the
potential to affect any of the network switches at MSC during the
outage window.

Long-running batch jobs on local MSC machines, as well as condor jobs submitted from local MSC machines, should probably be suspended until later in the morning of September 30th.

September 17 2014 - Linux /s/bin/python at 2.7.6

The default version of Python for Linux, found in /s/bin/python, is now at 2.7.6. It includes these additional modules:

  • scipy
  • numpy
  • matplotlib
  • xlsxwriter

Python 3.4 is available with the command python3. It has the same additional modules as 2.7.6 except matplotlib. It will likely be 2-3 years before a 3 series of Python is the local default.

September 16 2014 - Off-campus Network Problems

From the Medical School network group:

We're looking into a possible problem reaching off-campus resources. Does not appear to be a problem with the SMPH network. Call has been placed to the DoIT Noc; they are seeing the same thing and are investigating. Will let you know as more information becomes available.

August 26, 2014 - SAS 9.4

The default version of SAS on Linux is now 9.4. Simply run sas to get it.

If you still need 9.2 for reports, use sas92.

SAS 9.3 will not be relicensed.

August 20, 2014 - SAS 9.4

SAS version 9.4 is available on the Linux hosts with the command sas94.

We will make this the new default soon — the 9.3 license is expiring.

August 11, 2014 - Updates to linux R, SAS and LaTeX

These packages have been upgraded to more recent versions.

  • R is at 3.1.1. Use the command R215 to use the previous version.
  • SAS is at 9.3. Use the command sas92 to use the previous version.
  • LaTeX has been upgraded to the TeXLive 2013 release. Contact us if you need to use an earlier version.

May 29, 2014 - WIMR Electrical Shutdown (again)

On May 29th starting at 8pm Boldt will be cutting the power to everything, including the red emergency power outlets. All fume hoods, BSC's and outlets will be off during this shutdown. The power will be shut off from 8pm until 10pm and then turned back on from 10pm until midnight. See previous entry for details.

May 28, 2014 - WIMR Electrical Shutdown

On May 28th starting at 8pm Boldt will be cutting the power to everything, including the red emergency power outlets. All fume hoods, BSC's and outlets will be off during this shutdown. The power will be shut off from 8pm until 10pm and then turned back on from 10pm until midnight, to allow freezers and incubators to recover operational temps, and then turned off again for 2 more hours until all power is restored at 2am.

Boldt was made aware of concerns regarding loss of temp in our freezers and incubators and we expect that by keeping the power off for no more than two hour increments we will not see critical loss of temp in any of our equipment. However, cold rooms will not be restored to operational temp until the following morning at 6am.

-Do not plan to be in the building after 8 pm on the 28th as the building will go dark and all access points will fail locked

-Do not leave processes running over night as there will be no power

-Please find another option for items stored in cold rooms that can't tolerate room temp for 8 hours.

-Please post contact information on all of your freezers to help us reach out to you if we discover a problem with one of your units.

-Shutdown any PC attached to an instrument to avoid a hard shutdown.
